Hobbies for truck drivers on the road

It’s simply a fact. Hobbies help truck drivers on the road pass time quickly. Hauling freight for hours every day can get boring. Entertaining yourself during a long shift can be difficult, especially if your hands are wrapped around a steering wheel most of the time. Luckily, there are still a number of things you can do while in the cab or during a break to maintain your sanity. Here are some favorite hobbies picked up by truck drivers.

Play an instrument

Hobbies while in the cab

Just because you’re busy driving doesn’t mean you can’t pass the time by putting your mind to work. A few things you can do while in your truck.

Podcasts

It doesn’t matter what your interests are—news, sports, history or mysteries—there’s a podcast out there for you. So many podcasts exist; you will never run out of material. Most of them are also free. Find a listening app for your smartphone and load up some episodes so you can be entertained for hours on end hands-free while you drive.

Audiobooks

If you’re a fan of reading, listening to audiobooks is a great hands-free way of passing the time on the road. Since you can’t flip the pages of a novel while driving and reading can be a distraction, audiobooks are your best option. Many websites and applications give you access to a library of audiobooks for your listening pleasure.

Learn a language

Have you ever wanted to learn a new language? Truck driving gives you plenty of time to brush up on your Spanish, French or German. Several audio programs exist to help you learn a new language. Make productive use of your time while traveling across the country.

Hobbies while on break

There are a few activities you can perform during the little time you spend not behind the wheel. Here are some hobbies you can pick up during times you’re on break.

Exercise

It’s hard finding time to take care of yourself as a truck driver. Many truckers don’t find the time to eat right or exercise, which can lead to health problems. If you want to stay fit, try walking or jogging around a truck stop. Bring some weights with you and do some lifting. It’s a good way to relieve stress and remain healthy.

Learn a musical instrument

Playing a musical instrument can calm you and provide better body coordination.  Research has shown that both listening to music and playing an instrument will stimulate your brain and can increase memory.

Photography

Depending on where your job takes you, it’s possible to come across magnificent scenery. Taking pictures, whether you own a fancy digital camera or simply use your smartphone, can be a great way to unwind. It’s also something you can share with friends and family.

Knitting

Believe it or not, many truck drivers can be found knitting during their time off. It’s a creative activity with practical purposes. Make yourself a hat or gloves, or simply something beautiful. Knitting can be quite relaxing as well.

Make good use of your time

There’s no reason you can’t make good use of your time on the road delivering a truck load or during break time. Picking up some of the hobbies above can keep your mind busy and your body healthy. Be sharp and creative, and you will make it through every shift just fine.
